Plenty to see in the south of Iceland! Before we started on this trip we did a lot of online research to what we could visit. Based on this research, we've made a travel plan and this entry contains our absolute top 5! We rented a cabin about 25 km's north of Selfoss, so this was our starting point. We'll start at the bottom of the list and end off with the absolute must-see in the South of Iceland. By the way, for this post, none of the photos are enhanced. Let yourself be amazed by the beauty of Iceland!

At Geysir, you can still see the only working geyser in the world! You cannot go to Iceland and skip this place. To give your trip the cherry on the cake, you can also visit the Secret Lagoon to bathe in a natural lagoon.

Geysir Hot Springs

In this park, you can spend the whole day. There are several hiking trails, a visitor centre, a service centre and all kinds of historic markings, like the place where the first meeting of the delegates found place. This park is used a lot for filming movies and the views are amazing! This area is next to the Rift valley in Africa the only place in the world where you can see the separation of the tectonic plates above ground! The North Atlantic and Euro-Asian tectonic plates are still moving about two centimetres apart each year. Oh and don't forget to visit the waterfall!

Thingvellir National Park

It's a bumpy ride, but it's more than worth it! Hopefully, you did rent a 4x4, because you will only reach this place with a four-wheel-drive! A real colour spectacle made by nature!

This is also an area where you can only get by using a 4x4. Read the warning sign properly, to be aware of the risks involved visiting the place. The view is more than worth it! It's a beautiful glacier which ends in a lake where the melted ice chunks shine sparkle when the sun is shining. If you are all alone, it's really quiet. Combine this with our number 1, it's really nearby!

If you ask us, this is the absolute must-see in South Iceland. Wherever you are staying, it's well worth the trip! We drove about five hours for this (and also five hours back to our cabin) and I would do it again in a heartbeat! With clear skies, a true spectacle like you haven't seen before. The beauty kept me staring for hours and I couldn't take my eyes off it. You can almost hear the ice floes whisper. A true ode to Iceland! Don't forget to walk to the other side, to check out Diamond Beach.
